What We Stand For
Our guiding principles
Interfaith Solidarity
We believe that religious diversity is a source of strength. Our network spans every major faith tradition represented in New York City, united by a shared commitment to human dignity.
Community-Centered
Effective disaster response is built from the neighborhood up. Congregations are trusted institutions in their communities — we amplify what is already there.
Equity & Inclusion
Disasters deepen existing inequalities. NYDIS prioritizes multilingual outreach, accessible programming, and the most vulnerable populations in every initiative.
Prepared & Coordinated
Relief given without coordination is often relief wasted. We invest in relationships, systems, and training so that the City's response is organized and effective.
Our History
Two decades of service
Founded in the immediate aftermath of September 11 to coordinate faith-based relief efforts across the five boroughs.
Launched the first congregation-based preparedness curriculum, reaching 80 faith communities in year one.
Played a central coordinating role during Hurricane Sandy response, mobilizing 200+ congregations to provide shelter and meals.
Expanded the Interfaith Relief Network to include organizations representing more than 30 distinct faith traditions.
Shifted programming during COVID-19 to address food insecurity, PPE distribution, and mental health outreach in underserved neighborhoods.
Reached the milestone of 18,000 survivors served and 620 active partner congregations across New York City.
